Photo of the Day - Pushing Through

Better Late Than Never,

But here is how we celebrated Valentine's Day with the kids. Heart-shaped brownies and pepperonis on their pizza and some flower bulbs to plant from Cupid. Not at all cheesy (oh geez, and there is a pun there, sorry). XO

How to Make: Kick-ass Popcorn

It's really not that hard to make popcorn on top of your stove. Some kernels and a little magic ought to do the trick resulting in popcorn you can't eat fast enough. Weird. Here's how you really get the perfect blend of salt, butter and of course, popcorn.

You will need:
A really big pot
2 T. vegetable oil
1 T. unsalted butter
1/3 c. white corn kernels
1 decent shake of popcorn salt (use your judgment here)

Combine all the ingredients in the pot over high heat and cover. Don't leave. This won't take long. Give the pot a good swish to get all the kernels covered with the oil, butter, and salt. Stay put and listen, swishing occasionally. Once you really hear the oil bubbling in there keep the pot moving or you could burn the corn. You should start to hear popping soon so keep the pot moving over the heat until the amount of pops slows down to almost none. Remove from heat, put in your favorite bowl and eat. Voila!

Let me know if you can't get it right and I will try to send you some magic.

Ciao.

On the Hooks

Four concurrent projects, that don't really need to be concurrent.
Muno. Poor Muno is so far behind.
Another boy blanket in the works.
The cutest little sleeping baby toy...great pattern.

Ooweee, it's been longer than I thought and I've got nothing cooking.

We Needed to Get Out

The cold temperatures have finally receded some. It was nice to sit in some sunshine and let the kids stretch their legs.

Now that I've had a taste of warmth I don't think there is any going back for me. I am ready to see Spring.

How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?

Because that long hair of hers just will not stay untangled! So I have been forced to put them into two braided pigtails everyday and as cute as they are, I was starting to get a little bored with them. Since we have been watching the Sound of Music again recently I decided to give those little piggies a European twist.
You may have seen her "Fraulein" picture from yesterday, but that pic didn't do her ropey hair any justice. I piled the braids on top and bobby-pinned the heck out of them to keep them from coming loose. She didn't do too bad as long as she just stared at herself in front of the mirror. Then she deemed herself "Gretel" the rest of the day because she obviously now belonged to the Von Trapp Family.
She may be rethinking that trek over the mountains though.

Photo of the Day - Icy Pine

If you look really close you can see some tiny snowflakes. I wish I had seen them while I was outside.

Winter Weather

Our big snowstorm was somewhat of a let down since most of us have never seen 20 inches of snow all at once, but we received our fair share of ice.

We have actually had three bouts of snow this winter and are working on the fourth as I write. My car is now stuck at the end of our driveway over a poorly plowed mound of ice and snow.

I think more snow would have fallen into my car when I attempted to thaw it had it not been anchored by a dense sheet of ice. However, I can always appreciate the initial serenity a blanket of snow will impose.

The pooch and I were both tickled by the fact we did not sink in the snow because of the underlying ice. Every now and then my boots would find a soft spot, but it was neat to mosey across the top layer accumulation.

I typically try not to get tired of the seasonal weather because I feel it is essential to the Earth's and our own well-being, but it would be false for me to say I don't want a break from it...at least the wet stuff.

Hooking in the Snow

January has come to a close and I have accomplished my mission...Gromit is done. Oh boy, he is a whirlwind of cuteness. I sewed him together piece by piece today because we were snowed in.

He started out looking like Donkey Kong, which I will keep in mind should the barrel-breaking ape ever be requested.

Gromit started to come through when I attached his adorable ears.

I made a point of really paying attention to the placement of his extensions. I have been known to sew limbs on crookedly and have yet to reach for my straight pins to assist me.

First his arms and then his legs, well leg...

My little helper thought his other appendage would serve him better as a scarf.

Almost there...Gromit is great at blind sock-matching.
Are you ready to meet him-eyes and all?

...I would like to introduce Mr. Gromit complete.

He will be making a journey to the Windy City in the coming months to hopefully make another little someone as giddy as he makes me.
Gromit is looking on while I finish another project. There are a few more "layers" to this 'shroom before it's done (thank goodness!) And the red child's TV show character I have chosen to whip up for February is MUNO from Yo Gabba Gabba. If he has half the personality Gromit does I will be in good shape. Mooches.
