A Little Sunshine

Last year I made point of setting aside enough time to make new ornaments for my tribe. I am really glad I did, because the results were so much more meaningful and frugal for us than purchasing new ones. I tried my hardest to think of something that would relate to each of them and be somewhat joyful for me to make.

Boober's was by far the easiest to think of since every night at bedtime I sing You Are My Sunshine to her. I found this pattern and sized it down some to make it appropriate for the tree.

In hindsight, I probably would size it down one or two more rounds than what I did here. I also opted for a contrasting running stitch for embellishment instead of the typical smiley face. Happy as we are, Smiley's don't really do it for us.

Poor little sun looks pregnant! Although, the natural glow only helps it on the tree.

The little lady actually loved it so much she hung it on a knob on her dresser and wouldn't let me hang it on the tree. She wanted to see it while she was heading to Sleepy's house. I think it had the effect I was going for.

Turtleneck Vase Upcycle

Here's a simple and inexpensive craft to ease yourself back into the crafty swing of things after the holiday craze. Was yours crazy? Mine was substantially laid back this year.

After the parties and shindigs there is bound to be a bucket of items set for the garbage or recycle bin. Grab those glass bottles (smaller is better), some yarn, and glue to repurpose as a vase for your dresser or bathroom.

I used some small ginger ale bottles and cotton ombre yarn. Start by running a bead of glue around the lip of the bottle. Press the end of your yarn into the glue and wrap around.

Continue running the glue and wrapping your yarn, making sure there are no spaces between the strands.

I used my finger to rub the glue into all the yarn as I went. It dries clear, but the yarn in not soft on the outside if you do this. Follow your preference. With the cotton yarn, you don't notice the finish unless you touch it.

Keep wrapping to your heart's desire. I stopped just over the "shoulders" of the bottle because it reminded me of a turtleneck shirt. Set aside to dry completely.

After the glue dries, take a warm washcloth and gently rub any glue off the glass. Fill the bottom with a little water being careful not to get the yarn wet. Elmer's glue is water soluble. You can choose another glue if you have something waterproof on hand.

Add flowers, place on dresser, forget your winter blues. You just added some sunshine to your day! I just love how this yarn striped itself.

Viking Hat

Around the time I made the earflap hat, my nephew and my niece's brother, had an upcoming birthday. This one was actually completed on time.

I made very minor alterations to this pattern to allow for some growth and I shortened the horns so he would not impale his mother.

AAARRGHH! Wait, that's a pirate. What do vikings say?

Disclaimer: In the spirit of catching up and expanding my online portfolio of my sensational yarning capabilities, I am going to be sharing pieces from last year (OMG - is she for real?) For real. This is totally last year.

My niece turned 4 in August, so I made her a hat in October. I used this pattern from Lion Brand as a jumping off point because otherwise you get a hat for a shrunken skull. Luckily, I was able to find a willing subject to test the size.

Starting at the top, this is the second pom pom I made, and looking back, still could have been bigger - but I like it.

The added rows give it more of a pixie vibe while providing additional noodle coverage. Keeps it al dente.

So let's see...this hat works up quickly, uses one-two skeins of bulky yarn, and yields warmth and cuteness. I considered embellishing with a felt skull and crossbones patch, but decided to leave the decision to her. There are tons of possibilities for personalization with this hat.

The End Is Near

Time for year-end blog post 4, 389, 167. Wrapping up 2010, I made these goals for myself. #1, 2, and 6 happened without much interference. There were no bubble baths or knitty-gurumi, some new recipes attempted, and no club dancing with KT. And that is ok with me.

New year's are all about going with the river.

I have goals floating around for 2012, but I am not committing them to paper. No need. I have a new endeavor, though. This growing season I am helping out at Chateau LaBeaume to raise our own tasty produce. We might also try our hand at beekeeping, which thrills me inside and out.

...and technically, I haven't been away that long. I checked. Last post was November 3. It was worth it to shift focus while I finished my first semester at the new academy with the 4 point-o. Even though I was tending to my studies and ignoring my blog, I have been a yarning machine. In a good way-the kind of industriousness that makes me want to keep going. So there is much to share and some catching up to do. For now, I can show you a snazzy scarf I made for myself from this pattern and all with the scrumptious Full O'Sheep. Saturated color heaven!

I am in one of those phases where the tide drains back to the sea quickly and then crashes on the shore - without the violence of a tsunami. Anyway, this wavy path has kept me hooking more (Yeah!) than I probably should (Boo!)...shirking my other responsibilities in the process. And these little devils aren't helping.

Quick, fun, bright, easy, um...let's see. What other superlatives can I throw out there? Round, satisfying, cotton, absorbent, wide, colorful, cute. That's probably enough.

I made this set for some recent newlyweds. I just hope the colors go with something they own. They could always use them outside too.

Lost, Found, Hand-Me-Down - Tea Set

While pulling my bedroom together recently I came across my porcelain tea party set from my childhood. I have a couple of pieces on display on my dresser and the rest is still packed away. However, I was thinking that I will probably get it out and let the little girl start playing with it because it isn't doing any good in storage and I don't believe in hanging on to things you can't (or won't) use. And if the set makes through hours of good playtime perhaps someday she can pass it on to her children.

Upcycle Project - Air Freshener/Odor Absorber

As you may or may not already know I save all of the glass jars that come through our door. They are good for so many practical applications and are a good, cheap craft supply to have on hand. I soak the jars to remove their labels and give them a run in the dishwasher and unless you are storing food in them they are ready to use.

For this project I wanted something cute and reusable for the odor absorbers we keep in our closets and fridge to eliminate the monthly waste from the baking soda box. And it couldn't be simpler. Start with a clean glass jar. I chose the Bonne Maman preserves jars for their stout shape and cute lid.

Pick a design and using a sharp nail and hammer start tapping holes into the lid. I used the gingham pattern for my design, but you could use a marker to dot a cute pattern.

Most likely the nail will pull right back out, but use the claw end of the hammer to do this faster or if the nail gets stuck.

Make sure you have plenty of holes so the baking soda can absorb any odors floating around.

When your holes are all done turn the lid over and gently tap down the raw edges. This doesn't need to be perfect and can be skipped altogether if you choose. I just did it so I could feel better about my kids changing these.

Use your funnel and fill the jar about 3/4 of the way up with baking soda and change every 30 days. You just went from two boxes in the fridge and one in every closet in your house to 1 big box of baking soda and cute, reusable jars. Simple, right? If you want to add a ribbon, draw a design with a paint pen or any embellishment you can think of. I am not really a bow girl, plus I find more satisfaction with the simplicity so mine is unadorned. Ciao!

On Our Walk Today...

We tightened on her helmet, laced her shoes, showed her how to brake and let the little girl who is growing into a big girl start pedaling towards the pavement. It was her first time on a bicycle.

I actually got some exercise trying to keep up with her because now that she is on wheels she rips down the street. This is going to work out well...I can tell. Even with her new speed we still try to slow down and notice the world around us. Here is what we found today:

...tiny cones although we couldn't find the tree they fell from.

...the girl loves putting her hands in these pictures for size reference and I love that she does it.

...all of our treasures were dwarfed by this gigantic leaf. It is bigger than both of my hands put together.

Boober took a tumble from her seat right at the end of the ride, but she has decided she loves riding her bike just not getting scrapes.

A while back I bit off more than I could chew (who'da thunk it) and really started to think about why I was making that stuff. I was putting a lot of pressure on myself to make baby gifts and birthday gifts and stuff for my own home and it wasn't fun. So I stopped making what wasn't making me happy and have decided to crochet what I want to crochet when I want to crochet it. And yes I still have several projects going at once but only because I want to do them. And yess, I will still make gifts for others...it will just have to be balanced in with the other makings. And yesss, I have some pictures to share, but nothing too revealing yet. Perhaps you can guess what they are.

This one's obvious, but I am starting to make some progress on the details and I finally found the color felt I needed to complete Toodee...it's a kid thing.

No thanks to Michael's I finally have the colors I need to complete this ______. This yarn is so lush and saturated with color and it's all for ME.

Circling up some ________ for a friend's wedding this weekend. See I told you I would still make some gifts.

This is an upcycled project that has been gratifying to hook and it's made from our old t-shirts. Once complete you will notice it underfoot.

Here recently I feel like I have made an army of these things. That's not the case, but there are babies being born all around me. These two are connected in green. The boy ended up slightly bigger than the girl and the girl has a new flower detail that I love, but still need to improve.

I skipped the eyelashes for the boy version and might try adding a bow tie in the future. I wish I could have skipped the eyelashes for the girl because, man they are hard to do on crochet stitches!

These illustrate my room for improvement in embroidery. I am much better when it's done on a surface where I can access the back of the work and is solid. I am going to get it right soon. I can feel it.

Dresser-scape

We had a grown-up bedroom makeover this spring and I am loving the new digs. There are still details that need to be put in place, but that doesn't keep me from loving being in there. Recently we ditched the TV in our room and it cleared up a lot of space on our dresser. Naturally I took it over. Hee hee hee. In all reality, this bedroom redo gave us a chance to simplify, clean out some clutter, and allow me to be creative and resourceful - giving space to the things I really want to see and keep. What I am trying to say is my dresser is pretty cute.

John has already recognized my desire for a mirror on the wall, just in case I should need to conjure up an evil step-sister for the day. BTW - that's my granny's lamp.

The makeup brush glass was set for the thrift store, but I snagged it back just in time. That hummingbird flew over from Faith's house.

The earring rack is an old cooling rack propped against the wall. So far, no jewelry losses to report.

For the most part, the color palette is neutral with white/pale accessories and natural/wood colored elements. It's very easy on the eyes, organized, girly but not fussy...perfect for the time being because you know I get bored easily.

At first we were just watering the plants that needed a drink the most, but now it would seem we waited too long for some.

Tiger Lilies

This is by far the longest I have seen the plants go without rainfall. It's almost too much to try to keep up with.

The ferns in complete shade are the only ones left hanging on. A lot of the weeds are even suffering, although not enough if you ask me. Really I am just trying to get out of pulling them.

These trees may have officially bit the dust. There is just the slightest hint of green on the very inside and I have been watering everyday, so we'll just have to wait and see. It's not a huge loss since I scored these and then some for $15. They are, however, right in the middle of the fence line.

The good news is the guys on NPR were stating that the weather would make up for our lack of H2O this Summer with an abundance of rain and most likely flooding this Fall. Better pull out your galoshes.

Rainbow Cake

Not sure if I have already told you or not, but each week this summer the kids and I decided to make a dessert. That's a pretty big deal for me since we typically only have that stuff on birthdays or holidays. However, this was a lot of fun for us...and tasty. Which brings us to a cake made of rainbows and magic and maybe some unicorn hooves.

We kept our first attempt simple with four colors and minimal mixing which kind of left them looking like giant eyes or boobs.

My icing job was by no means pretty seeing how I have never iced a cake before and that this wasn't about looks, merely pleasure.

And indulging was the best part! We are looking forward to trying more colors and maybe trying it with cupcakes.

Lost, Found, Hand-Me-Down - Vintage Vanity Set

Today I am sharing another inherited treasure from my Gram. I finally got it cleaned up enough to have out full time.

I really don't know anything about this set other than it has been around my thirty years and that as a child I loved to play with it. On the left is the mirror and to the right is a bristle brush. It really doesn't feel too good on your noodle, but when my hair was down my back it worked wonders on the tangles.

Since it is out on my dresser I decided to mix it in with my other Grandma's hand-me-downs. They look right at home with each other. More pics from the dresser and bedroom soon. It is starting to look really cute and grown-up (but not in a frumpy, grumpy, stick-in-the-mud way). XO

RetroBlog - Crispy Chicken

Back in April we attended our first annual Wing Ding at Faith's house. In honor of the festivities I decided to sculpt a chicken for dessert.

Ha! He kind of looks like a Lochness bird or something. If you intend to sculpt with Krispie Treats I suggest letting them set in the fridge a little otherwise it won't hold together. The eggs on the other hand were super simple because I just shoved some of the mix in one of the kids' plastic Easter eggs. Done and dunner.

Lost, Found, Hand Me Down - Notions

Recently I decided to tackle about 5 years worth of spring cleaning in the middle of summer. Bonehead move?..maybe. Do I feel better? Absolutely. Whilst sifting through the clutter I came across a cloth pouch filthy from years of love and good use.

The pouch belonged to my Gram (surprise, surprise) and she used it to house her cable knitting needles, tiny scissors, tapestry needles and an old fabric measuring tape. I was pretty glad I came across it too because I was just entertaining the idea of investing in cable needles since I ~~have~~ had none. Also pictured are some of the other notions that belonged to her and were near cable clutch.

Another special find is the tiny blue pencil. I remember these as the only pencils my grandparents used, particularly my Grandpa. He always had several of these pencils around and I don't think I ever saw one that was longer than 3 inches. My Grandpa sharpened them to complete nubs as he worked his crossword puzzles on a plastic yellow clipboard with a tube of Rolaids nearby. It was a nice memory to come across and I now own three of the blue nubs. Muy bueno.

The kids and I have done tons of new things this summer....made a dessert each week of the summer, painted pet rocks, dyed celery, created bean portraits to name a few. Unfortunately, I haven't photographed most of it because sometimes the camera is a distraction from good play-time. Back in March though we headed to the lanes for some bowling. It was also Boober's first time.

Felted Fun

I made this for Boober back in May. The pieces to one of her wooden puzzles had been gnarled by our vicious Shih Tzu a.k.a. sweet Bella leaving us the wooden frame it came assembled in. I try very hard not to clutter or be a pack rat but I also despise waste - of any kind.

So I decided to make a felt board for my girl. I have seen the cheap ones at Michael's for about $8 and the felt is total crap. This cost me a little less, is better quality and I made it myself. Woot! First I used some felt glue and slapped some black felt on the back of the frame. It kind of looks like a slate now.

Then I cut some felt. At first I thought about cutting out intricate shapes and people and animals and all the fun accessories that go with them but decided not to because A) I had trouble finding some sharp scissors even though we own a million pairs and B) I really like the idea of using basics shapes to create whatever is in her imagination...sort of like mosaic tiles and geometric blocks.

And then we played. See she even incorporates her own geo-blocks with the felt. Clever girl! Toys like this make me want to get rid of the rest of our toys, but don't tell my kids.

Sometimes you just get so wrapped up in yarn you forget to share what you're doing with everyone. Here are just a few of the tokens I have had my hands on recently.


Oh Gabba Gabba!

Poor Gabba. Progress has definitely been made here, but there is still a long way to go. I am hoping to have them done by the time school starts. Pattern on Etsy . (and not available anymore it looks like)

I save all my glass jars I get from food and repurpose them into something. This applesauce container is now a piggy bank for my niece who just turned 8. There is a lid with a slot too, but it wasn't ready for the photo shoot.

Grainy pic...sorries. This whirly bird scarf was also for my just-turned-8 niece and I might even have a pattern to share for it.

And these cute little coffee cup cozies are, well, coffee cup cozies. Faith has been begging the Kuhn and I to make these for a while and they were ready for her June birthday. I really like them, but if I make them again I will not crochet a bottom circle as directed because on mine it threw off the shape once on the mug. Also, a coffee mug just feels better resting on its solid bottom. Free pattern on Ravelry.
I have been making a point to play with my yarn everyday so once I make a point to photograph it all I might share it too.

Morning. My mom recently brought over some of the board games my brothers and I used to play and an old word game was among them. Those are my favorite kind! And while you could just get out a pen and paper for this one we had high-tech apparatus to smooth out the impending slaying. I mean if you play against me that is what is going to happen.

I had the pleasure of a ~~friendly~~ game with my niece in which I beat her too and she's very sharp, but I have mad skills.

Fast-forward a few months and we find ourselves on a TCK home visit (they have a new poll, by the way). After cruising the basement for a vacuum cleaner we stumbled upon an even older version of Hangman.

This time playing my analytic son I won...again...and again.

Backblog: Pinewood Derby

Prior to becoming a Bear Scout, Bud carved his first Pinewood Derby car and mostly on his own with a little help from me and Dad.

Unfortunately, this is currently the only pic I have of his finished vehicle...not sure how that happened. In lane 4 you will see a white vehicle that resembles very accurately a Wii Remote. Lots of other scouts were cheering his car on because it was so recognizable.

Anxiously awaiting the race to begin.

On his best run he came in third. He has already started hatching plans for another racer next year. We are proud his car did so well and Bud completed most of the work himself. Great job!

Backblog - Elliott's Tummy Time Blanket

Ya know, I debated whether or not to even post this stuff or just move on, but the pics are already edited and some of it I really want to share no matter how 'old' it is. Hence, another tummy time blanket...this time for my newest pal Elliott. I figured he would need something soft and cushy, yet durable while he strengthens those neck and core muscles.

No real pattern for this, but the idea and joining method comes from HERE. I think for Cooper's I did 30 stitches across by 20 rows and Little E's I did 35 across by 20 rows. And boy did I fret about colors and placement every time I picked it up because I wanted it to look random, but it's not and that's ok too. It turned out well.

Note to self for next time...I think if I use a double crochet stitch instead of single on the border next time it may not curl up like that. It flattened a bit after I stretched it though. I am anxious to do some of these for my little voices, only bigger. And maybe one for me someday...

Crossing Over

In addition to the Sassy Lady turning 4 last weekend, we also had a Wolf Scout cross over to a Bear Cub! RAAHRRRRRRR!

Amongst other awards he earned 7 belt loops last year - one of them for photography. He took all the pictures and constructed this collage all on his own and learned the parts of the camera to help him earn the loop.

After crossing the bridge with his mom/den leader he upgraded his dad upgraded his neckerchief and slide.

We have already perused the Bear Scout handbook and are looking forward to trying some new things and revisiting some past topics with our growing scout.

I hastily finished this juicy fruit for one special teacher and have another to finish this weekend. I crocheted the stem because the pattern called for a piece of yarn with a knot in the end and it looked silly. I plan to do the next one in red and a better job not letting the stuffing show through, but I always wonder why patterns like this decrease so quickly, thereby leaving large holes in the work.

This is what my lunch hours and nights have consisted of for about the past month...trying to have it all done by Sunday because someone special is turning 4 that day.

Also trying not to sweat the deadline.

Back in the Windy City

Only this time I decided to spend the night twice and then make the trek home. Partly an anniversary trip (6 years wed to my love), partly mental break and partly a visit to some good friends and their new addition. I only wish we could have stayed an extra day.

Hubble's out-of-town BFF

This is Jeff. He is now the proud owner of a fantastic home in the city of Chicago that he got for a steal, not to mention how freaking cute it is. He blamed this on his mom. And that little bundle is a complex concoction of baby sweetness. He also happens to be the recipient of Gromit (sigh). I confess that I never pegged Jeff as a daddy, but he is a natural and fatherhood suits him well. Not to mention his energetic and terribly sweet wife, who unfortunately I didn't get any pictures of.

Since our plans were flexible for the weekend the new sleep-deprived parenting duo obliged our request to go look for cowboy boots by taking us to a thoroughly Western storefront.

Talk about a hootenanny! This place was packed and in the middle of the city...WTF! The kids' section was hilarious, but the baby ranch-hand clothes were far too pricey for the little wear they would get. But let's get down to the brass tacks. We were here for boots and boots we did find.

This is just one row of the men's section. Some new, some used, all in great shape. And the price? Well I didn't come home with any boots and contemplated purchasing kids boots because they were cheaper, but I didn't care for their styles as much.

$400...on sale. They weren't all this high and there were a few that were higher still, but methinks I will just be dreaming about boots for now. Really I am hoping to come across the perfect pair in the thrift store someday. I just hope I won't be over 50 then.

Apparently this place is pretty popular too because they have a pair of Andre the Giant's boots on display. Woot! That footwear is massive.

We finished up the day with some thrifting and a Giordano's pizza. I had the chance to crochet for hours throughout our stay and John got a new pipe. On our way out Sunday we had a brisk first encounter with IKEA. I am pretty sure that store is as big as Andre's boots and just as nutty as professional wrestling, but I look forward to going again-perhaps when we aren't as rushed.

Bedroom Makeover

Really, it's about time we updated our sleepy reprieve...something a little more grown-up and pulled together. I am getting pretty excited. Currently we are right about here-

The closet on the right is now primed as well.

I love this color red, but it goes with nothing I own now and is too much for our room. We also found some artwork for that big, empty wall.

The colors are way off here, but that is our new comforter at the bottom (my first Marimekko...Huzzah!) We had a mini-helper in charge of the paint chip organization and removal and we finally settled on a light gray color called "Reflecting Pool". How serene! Well, it will be when we can move back into the room.

Blue and Gold

Welcome to the Cubbies! It's a huge event amongst the ranks of boy scouts in America where they are recognized for their achievements throughout the year. This pack tried a different approach this year with superlative awards at the banquet to keep the mood lighthearted and fun.

It all started with strut down the red carpet past the "parent-razzi" that was commissioned to snap photos of the troops.

Most Dramatic

When Bud was recognized for being "Most Dramatic" he threw up his hands in disbelief and exclaimed in protest "What?!!" And the drama ensued...

Being unprepared for his tongue-in-cheek award, Bud retired under the table because he is not at all dramatic.

Despite his respite under our feet the little Wolf Scout eventually emerged to collect is prize, patches and belt loops for all of his hard work. Keep up the good work dude!

P.R.I.S.M Project

This year Bud had to try his hand at a science project for school to prepare him for the evaluated version in third grade. I was happy to see the format for science projects have a come a long way since I was in school. Without sacrificing the content educators have developed a method that can possibly involve the students in the learning process more if their parents give them the opportunity to explore the material. Also these projects are not just based on writing anymore either giving those with different abilities a chance to express what they learned in an acceptable format. For Bud this is great because he was able to create some art for this project as well as write and research. He chose hyenas as his topic and this is his model. He sculpted and painted the whole thing and I couldn't be more proud.

Under 150

Yep, that number is my weight or rather it was my weight. 150 pounds I am no longer and what exciting news that is. At least for me. You see, last year I made it my goal to change my lifestyle and establish some good habits to keep me fit and in overall better health. I pay very close attention to what I eat now and I make sure I am "moving" 6 out of 7 days a week. I lost 25 pounds in the process and feel really, really good...mentally and physically. I feel good, not because I am down a few dress sizes, but because I changed my habits and not just my weight. I am proud of my success, but got held up at this 150 number for several months towards the end of 2010. And it is not a bad number for my height to be, but there was/is still a little room for improvement and that has been my goal for 2011...refining my habits and the process. Last week, it finally paid off when I stepped on the scale and saw 149. In celebration I thought I would share a few of the snacks I eat regularly that have really helped me achieve my goals.

Simple homemade trail mix

I make this simplified trail mix about every two weeks for my husband and myself. I have no clue what serving size he eats, but I eat no more than 1/2 a cup a day and really, I don't need to. This serving will hold me over for at least two hours and usually longer. To make it mix 1 lb. whole almonds, 1 lb. walnut pieces, 24 oz. raisins and half a normal bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips in a large bowl. That's it. The nuts are unsalted and supply the good fats and protein I need and the raisins and chocolate chips add that little bit of sweet I sometimes crave. This is a great afternoon snack when you need that extra Oomph to get you to dinner. No need for mini-candy bars and you could actually split the bag of chocolate into thirds for this mix. I kind of feel like they are everywhere.

Plain Yogurt Parfait

I really should have gotten a better pic, but I don't typically eat this out of a brandy glass. This is my new favorite, go-to eatsy treatsy. I realize this is not ice cream, but ohmygod this does the trick in the mornings. I eat this nearly everyday. Very simply I mix 1/4 cup frozen blueberries and 1/2 cup plain yogurt the night before. This gives the blueberries time to thaw so they don't hurt your teeth! In the morning I add 1/4 cup of Grape Nuts cereal, mix and eat. Protein, fruit, whole grains, fiber and low fat...can't beat it.

Now, to be fair, I cheated on this one at first. The process is ongoing ya know? I used to despise plain yogurt, but I am trying to get away from foods with added sugar. Don't be afraid to use a vanilla yogurt instead though. It's better than eating a super sugary granola or candy bar. I figured that I could probably acquire the taste for plain yogurt if I just tried it long enough though. I did, too, after a month of adding a 1/4 teaspoon of cane sugar to this mix. I slowly backed off and can now eat it without any hesitation. I have found that the organic plain yogurts tend to taste better than non-organic, but Dannon has a whole plain yogurt that consists of just cultured milk and a has a sort of cream cheese taste to it that was very good. If you can't/don't do organic, then I would give that one a go.

In long-winded conclusion, let's see how long it takes me to get to 145. Swimsuit season is coming up.

One Week Ago Today...

...I arrived home at 5 in the morning after an arduous drive from Chicago. It was sooooo worth it. About a week before that Jenn and I found out this little group would come to visit from Down Under. We knew we had to go.

Heather on keyboards. Her 12 or 13 key reach did not look so big in person.

Our first glimpse of the Jezabels came from a blog called Meet Me at Mike's, run by Pip. Pip posted one of their videos and these two St. Louis girls were instantly enamored with their sound.

Sam made some awesome sounds on his geetar.

The show in Chicago also happened to be their very first headlining show in America and they did not disappoint. Their sound was tight and they packed the house which was pretty amazing because a lot of the people there didn't even know their songs! Jenn and I made sure to stand front and center and sing and dance.

The running joke for the week leading up to the show was "Oh, it will be small enough that we'll get to meet the band." Honestly, I think we both halfheartedly believed that. When we arrived in Chi-town we parallel parked for about 10 minutes in the biggest spot we could find (I think it was meant for a Yaris) and went to the restaurant to eat. As we walked to our table I took stock of the other patrons and saw them. The Jezabels were sitting no less than 10 feet away and we were overcome with a somewhat embarrassing starstruck awe.

We needed a drink, but figured we would never have an opportunity like this again. They weren't eating yet and the restaurant was relatively empty so we nerved up and said hello.

They were totally grateful and laid back. We shared our travel story and let them know we thought they were worth the sleep deprived trip. We also told them our joke about meeting them and Nic, the drummer said "Well let's one-up that. Let's have a beer after the show." Are you kidding me?!!! We were in heaven and decided to let them eat in peace.

After the show, we hung around and chatted with the group and they were kind enough to take a picture with us. We told them we would make the trip again if they ever came back and thanked them for the wicked show and memories.

I got two hours of sleep the next morning and went to work, but hearing "Easy to Love" live was one of the best moments of my life.
